A pool is a room. Its edge is the floor.
Most pool surrounds are treated as an afterthought — a strip of pavers dropped in once the pool is signed off. We treat the surround as the room the pool sits inside: a continuous floor that has to drain, breathe, resist salt and chlorine, and stay cool and safe underfoot in a Melbourne summer.
That means the paving is drawn, engineered and set out before it is laid. Falls are calculated away from the water. Coping is detailed to sit flush and true. Joints are gauged so the pattern reads as one field, not a patchwork. The result looks inevitable — which is the hardest thing to achieve.
We take on both new builds and the re-paving of tired existing surrounds, working around established gardens and structures without tearing the whole property apart.
Four stones we lay around water.
Bluestone
The Melbourne classic. Dense, cool-toned and cool underfoot, with a sawn or tumbled finish that holds grip when wet.
Travertine
Pale, porous and naturally non-slip. Stays comfortable in full sun and softens the light around the water's edge.
Granite
The hardest option we lay. Near-impervious to salt and stain, for surrounds that must last decades without fuss.
Limestone
Warm, honeyed and elegant. Best on honed coping and shaded surrounds where a refined, quiet finish is wanted.

Survey & set-out
We measure the pool, the levels and the surrounding ground, then draw the paving to scale — falls, coping line and joint grid resolved on paper first.
Base & drainage
A compacted, reinforced base is built with strip drains and falls engineered to carry water away from the pool and the house, not toward them.
Coping first
The coping — the edge that meets the water — is set before the field. It is the reference every other slab is laid to, so it must be perfect.
The field
Slabs are laid outward from the coping on a full mortar bed, cut on site to the set-out, with joints gauged for a single, continuous field of stone.
Seal & handover
Joints are grouted, the stone is sealed against salt and chlorine, and the surround is cleaned and inspected slab-by-slab before we hand it back.

Pool paving, answered.
Yes. A large share of our surround work is replacing tired or failing paving around an existing pool. We can lift and rebuild the surround while protecting the pool shell, established planting and any adjoining structures.
It depends on light, aspect and how the space is used. Bluestone and granite are the most durable; travertine and limestone are cooler underfoot and softer in tone. We recommend a material once we've seen the site — there is no single right answer.
Always. We specify tumbled, honed or sawn finishes rated for wet, barefoot areas, and detail the coping edge so there is grip exactly where people step in and out of the water.
Falls are calculated at the set-out stage and built into the base, directing water into concealed strip drains and away from both the pool and the house. Nothing is left to chance on site.
A typical surround runs two to four weeks on site once materials are on hand, depending on size, access and detailing. We give you a fixed program with your quote so you know exactly what to expect.
Our stonework carries a twenty-year warranty. A principal is on site through the build, and we stand behind every joint we set.
